Licensing
Mbedthis provides its software under an open source license and under a commercial license. It is your option which license you choose. This is called dual licensing.
This page helps explain what are the features of the two licenses and assists you to choose which one best suits your needs. This page is a guide only, please consult the actual licenses for the governing terms. If you have questions, please consult the licensing FAQ or contact us at:
The two licenses are:
- Open Source License -- General Public License
- Mbedthis Commercial License
The Open Source license is the GNU license governed by the provisions of the GPL license. The Mbedthis Commercial license is a typical commercial license which warrants the software and provides support for a fee.
Recommendation
For non-profits or educational institutions, the GPL license should be able to meet your needs. For limited evaluation purposes within a company, the GPL should be ideal. For commercial uses, we recommend the Commercial License.

If your application is not provided to your customers under an approved open source license and you wish to redistribute your application you will need a commercial license. There are several good reasons to use a commercial license:
- You want the ability to redistribute your product including AppWeb
- You do not want to provide the source code to your application
- You need a warranty on the software from Mbedthis
- You do not want to run the risk of your organization's software falling under the governing terms of the GPL
- You want support
- You want priority notification of security issues and emergency patches
Commercial Download
The Commercial download for AppWeb is the same as the open source download. The only difference is your aquisition of an executed commercial license agreement which you can purchase online.
Redistribution
If you use the Commercial License, there are no restrictions on embedding your code within AppWeb.
The GPL license is ideal for internal use, evaluation and some cases of stand-alone use.
If your software is 100% GPL or is licensed under an Open Source License that is OSI approved and acceptable to Mbedthis Software, you may use Mbedthis products and embed them in your applications or devices. You do not need any other agreement or license -- the GPL is all you need.
Open Source AppWeb Download
With the download, you will receive binaries, source code, and documentation and you need not pay any license fees. You must however, abide by all the provisions of the GPL. These include (among other provisions) that if you redistribute your software and include Mbedthis software within your application, you must provide your complete source code to all. If you do not wish to provide source code to your application, you may purchase a commercial license (see below for details).
Note that under the GPL license, you may develop, evaluate and embed Mbedthis software in your application or product provided it is not redistributed either internally or externally. You may copy and modify the source code provided all copies fall under the GPL license.
Redistribution
You may also redistribute Mbedthis products if you only use them in a stand-alone fashion as freestanding binaries without embedding them in your application. These redistributed copies remain under the GPL license.
